My list of the top 5 tents for extreme cold weather

I have been camping since I was a boy so I have plenty experience. I also worked for a company that sold tents (decent quality but not great). I was able to learn what makes a good tent and what doesn't during this time. Any questions or comments, feel free to comment below.

Why we chose this one?

There are few names making extreme weather-resistant camping tents that carry the same pedigree as Mountain Hardwear. When you buy a tent with the Mountain Hardwear logo on it, you know that you are getting a solid piece of kit that will be able to withstand the elements regardless of the current season or weather conditions. These tents truly are all-weather shelters that you can trust to keep you safe, warm, and secure, irrespective of where you choose to go camping.

The Pathfinder has a couple of new features that are noteworthy and which make this tent a step above its predecessors. For one thing, this is the first tent from Mountain Hardwear that they describe as being “guaranteed watertight”. This isn’t just water-resistant like most tents are. This is a tent that is promising to keep the water out in a way that only the highest-quality tents are usually capable of.

This level of water resistance has been achieved through a combination of measures, including the use of welded seams and a fully taped fly and bathtub floor. In fact, the nylon floor is as rugged and heavy-duty as the rest of the tent - this is a floor that is going to pass the test of time.

Why we chose this one?

When you put the word “Extreme” in a product name, it sets up a certain level of expectation in the minds of your audience. Businesses don’t always deliver on their hyperbolic terminology; most experienced campers have at least one horror story about buying a product that was marketed as being an extreme, deluxe, or super edition, only to discover that the word is an empty descriptor that means nothing.

Fortunately, ALPS’ Extreme 3 Outfitter tent is more than worthy of carrying the “extreme” tag. This is an incredibly resilient tent that will easily withstand all but the most extreme conditions. The tent is designed to resist strong winds effectively and its three aluminum poles are incredibly strong without being too heavy and awkward to carry. Better still, this tent isn’t just resistant to strong winds when it has been erected - it is one of the few tents we have tried that is relatively easy to put up in strong winds, thanks to some excellent and innovative design work.

When it comes to three-person tents, there aren’t many options that can seriously compete with the Extreme 3 Outfitter from ALPS Mountaineering. Everything about this tent’s design and build quality is the embodiment of excellence.

Why we chose this one?

The Hubba Hubba NX is another tent that has been engineered specifically to be easier to put up when the winds are strong. It is also an exceptionally resilient tent, despite being lightweight and easy to carry and erect. Campers will also find it much more spacious inside than they might expect. Because MSR has opted to move away from the usual tapered floor design, the corners are stretched out in order to maximize the amount of available floor space. in fact, campers will have access to a full 29 square feet of space, more than enough to comfortably fit two people.

With respect to the build quality of the tent itself, MSR has made all the right decisions. The tent is made from ripstop nylon, a heavy-duty material that is coated with Durashield coating in strategic spots to enhance its waterproofing. Another feature that we really like about the Hubba Hubba NX is the inclusion of built-in rain gutters in its design.

Weighing just three lbs, this is a heavy-duty weather-resistant tent that you can easily transport with you to even the most treacherous of landscapes. If you are traveling light and looking to keep your load as light as possible, the Hubba Hubba NX is an excellent tent.

Why we chose this one?

This is another tent that has been very appropriately named. The Cave, as it has been affectionately christened by SnugPak, definitely resembles a cave when it has been fully put up. However, SnugPak’s Cave is a much more inviting prospect than a conventional cave would be. The tent is very comfortable inside and does an excellent job of retaining heat while keeping wind and rain from ruining the experience. No matter how bad the weather is outside, you can be confident of remaining comfortable and dry throughout.

The Cave easily fits four people inside with plenty of room for everyone. You can even expand the amount of available space by adding a fifth pole to the tent’s usual four-pole setup. Once you add in this extra space, there is more than enough room for people, equipment, and supplies. As well as its impressive size and build quality, The Cave also utilizes some unique design choices that make it noteworthy. For example, as a double-layer tent, SnugPak’s Cave has an excellent extreme weather rating. Having an inner tent that is covered by a separate fly provides an extra level of insulation and weatherproofing. If you are looking for a four-person tent that is going to be able to withstand the most rigorous weather pressures it is likely to face, The Cave is an excellent choice.

·Tent Area: 51 sq. ft.

Why we chose this one?

Outdoor Research has always been one of the more innovative businesses involved in the design and manufacture of extreme weather tents and the Helium Bivy tent continues their proud tradition for innovation and quality. The tent is named the Helium thanks to its exceptionally lightweight design that has enabled Outdoor Research to achieve the impossible and compress a rugged, weather-resistant tent into a lightweight and easy-to-transport package. This is a significantly lighter tent when compared to Outdoor Research’s other recent models and it is an interesting direction for the business to have taken.

Whereas other weather-resistant tent manufacturers are focused on producing tents that are as sturdy and as rugged as possible, Outdoor Research is working to ensure that tents aren’t just strong but that they remain portable for the average traveler. More importantly, Outdoor Research has proven that it is possible to produce a tent that is lightweight and highly transportable without having to sacrifice its resilience or strength. As well as being physically strong, the Helium is also very effectively waterproofed and is made from a breathable material. The result is that using the Helium is an excellent experience. Being lightweight also doesn’t prevent the Helium from being able to withstand even the strongest winds you are likely to face.

·Tent Area: 14.8 sq. ft.
